2012 HS Baseball Begins

One of the most memorial High School baseball games I Have ever witnessed is the 2010 fourth round state playoff game in which Lee County wins with a walk off home run to eliminate Apex.

Having been rained out on the opening day for both teams, a rematch opens the season at Lee County.  The starting pitchers, both lefties, have letters of intent for their next season.  Lee County pitcher, Durazl, was the starting pitcher for the 2010 upset.  Apex pitcher, Tanuta, is headed to NC State.

Durazl starts the first with one K, one BB and two ground ball outs.  Tanuta strikes out the side.  This sets the tone for the next five innings.  By the end of the sixth inning the stats for both pitchers was phenomenal.

Durazl:  No runs, No hits, 2 walks, 12 K’s (4 looking), 85 pitches (54 S/31B)

Tanuta: No runs, 1 hit (single), 3 walks, 12 K’s (3 looking), 101 pitches (63 S/38B)

Durazl finishes the top of the seventh with two more K’s, a deep fly out to center and a NO HITTER.  Apex brings in another pitcher to close it.  Having to face their cleanup hitter the hard throwing right hander throws a first pitch curve ball for a strike.  The second pitch fast ball is drilled into left center field getting by the diving left fielder and goes to the wall for a standup triple.  With a pitching change, back to a lefty, Apex chooses to intentionally walk the next batter to bring up runners on first and third.  The number six batter at the plate is no other than Durazl.  Could he win his own game offensively and defensively?  Not tonight, the first pitch hits him to load the bases.  There is still a chance to get out of this and head into extra innings with everyone playing in. Incomes the number seven batter who has the only hit in the game.  First pitch strike brings hope for everyone from Apex.  Pitch number two hits the batter to bring across the winning run, game over.  That’s Baseball!

Durazl Final Unofficial Stats:

No runs, No hits, 2 walks, 14 K’s (5 looking), 96 pitches (63 S/33 B)
