Andy Fowler, the girls tennis coach at Sanderson high for the last 25 years, plans to retire from teaching following his season.
Fowler has coached the girls team for 25 years and the boys team for 22. In addition, she has been oneĀ of the N.C. High School Athletic Association's site coordinators for many regional and state competitions.
She teaches biology and anatomy at Sanderson and said she knew it was time to step aside from teaching and coaching.
Fowler built a 515-269 record as a head coach.
"You remember the best players, of course, the ones that did well in the state tournament, but you also remember the other players," Fowler said. "Some of my fondest memories are of the players who worked hard and kept improving.
"One of the best things about teaching and coaching is hearing from the kids years later. They tell you they are still playing, or that they are teaching their kids how to play. Those experiences are among the most rewarding in coaching."
