Durham Academy wins "Play 4 the Cure" field hockey tournament

Durham Academy won the “Play 4 the Cure” field hockey tournament on Saturday by defeating Charlotte Providence Day School 5-0 in the championship game. Tournament MVP Lauren Rogers had three goals in the title game, while Robin Blazing had the other two.

The two-day annual tournament, which raised money for breast cancer research, was hosted by Cary Academy. After pool play on Friday, the 12 teams were broken up into three four-team brackets on Saturday.

The top four teams from pool play -- Durham Academy, Providence Day, Cary Academy and East Chapel Hill -- played in the championship bracket. The "Blue" bracket took the next four teams while the "Gold" bracket included the bottom four teams from pool play.

Winston-Salem Reynolds defeated Winston-Salem Mount Tabor 2-1 for the Gold bracket championship. Carrboro defeated West Forsyth 2-1 for the Blue bracket championship.

Chapel Hill split into two teams for the tournament. The "A" team played in the Blue bracket along with Pffafftown Reagan High School, while the "B" team played in the Gold bracket along with Kinston Arendell-Parrott Academy.

Championship game goal attribution correction

The attribution on goals scored in the championship game above was inaccurate. Tournament MVP Lauren Rogers had one goal in the title game, while Robin Blazing scored the other four.
