Clayton's Chris Archer to open 2011 baseball season with Montgomery Biscuits

Bookmark and Share

Clayton native Chris Archer will start the 2011 season with the Montgomery (Ala.) Biscuits, the Ray's Double-A franchise. Archer was moved from the Chicago Cubs' franchise to the Tampa Bay Rays' farm system during the off-season in a trade.

The 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher and the rest of the Biscuits open their season Thursday against Birmingham (Ala.). Montgomery will visit the Carolina Mudcats May 3-7.

Archer was 15-3 last season in the Cubs' organization between Single-A Dayton and Double-A Tennessee with a 2.34 ERA. He was also named the Cub's Minor League Pitcher of the Year. He didn't allow an earned run in four appearances with the Rays' big league club in spring training this year.

About the blogger

D. Clay Best has served as the sports editor of The Herald since 1997 and has covered high school sports since 1992. He's gone through many neighborhoods of NFL-fandom including the Cowboys, Raiders and Patriots and is in limbo right now. If that's not enough to require therapy, he also has way too much brain space filled with useless info on the legendary '80s TV series "Miami Vice."
