Sophomore Marissa Bellamy of Bunn won the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A state championship in the 200 meters in 2009, breaking a 12-year-old 2-A record. Coach David Howle thinks she will contend in the 100 this season as well.
"I didn't want to run her in two sprints last year because she was a freshman," Howle said. "But he is running so well this season. I really think she could be a contender in both sprints."
Bellamy won with a 24.69 in 2009. She hasn't matched that time this year yet, but has posted three times under 25.20, which are the fastest times reported in the area.
In the 100, she has run an 11.85, which also is the area's fastest reported time.
"She can fly," Howle said. "She is just fun to watch fun.
"She also is a fine person and a really good student."
