Browning signs with Gardner-Webb

Bookmark and Share

Raleigh Broughton High quarterback Chandler Browning signed with Gardner-Webb on Wednesday.

Browning (6-foot-3, 235 pounds) completed 143 of 259 passes for 1,705 yards during the 2008 season. He threw 15 touchdown passes and had six passes intercepted.

The Caps finished 6-6.

“Chandler is an ACC caliber quarterback in my mind, and he’s obviously
a young man we feel can come in and be a tremendous asset to our
football program and university,” said G-W coach Steve Patton. “Early on in the
process, he was making visits and receiving serious interest from
several schools on the FBS level. We are fortunate to land him.
Chandler can make all the throws, and has the elusiveness and speed to
get out of the pocket when needed. He also has a great head on his
shoulders.”

Browning will be the third generation in his family to play Division I college football. His father, Craig Browning, played quarterback at Duke in the early 1980s.

His grandfather, Art Browning, was an
offensive guard and kicker on Duke’s 1961 Cotton Bowl team – and kicked
the winning extra point in a 7-6 decision over Arkansas in that game.

Chandler Browning

Gardner Webb landed a giant in Chandler Browning. He definitely is ACC talent, so to steal him away was quite a victory for GW. Not only is he a football talent, but a very fine young man.
