West Raleigh Baseball 10U All-Stars reach Cal Ripken World Series

West Raleigh is at it again.

The West Raleigh 10U Cal Ripken All-Star team is heading to the Cal Ripken World Series this month, hoping to match last year's 10U team, which won the World Series played in Abbeyville, La.

This year's West Raleigh Baseball Association 10U team will travel to Lamar, Colo., near Denver, where the 10-team, double-elimination championship event will be played Aug. 13-23.

West Raleigh team advanced to Colorado by winning the 10-state Southeastern Regional this past weekend in Arlington, Va. The region title came with a 9-8 victory over Julington Park (Fla.). West Raleigh opened with an 8-3 victory over Glen Allen (Va.), then defeated Julington Park 7-1 and Matthews (N.C.) 6-1 to set up a championship game against Julington Park.

To finance the Colorado trip, team spokesman and webmaster Gary Feder said, West Raleigh is raising funds at several events on Saturday, Aug. 8, and accepting donations, which are tax-deductible. (FUNDRAISERS UPDATED AUG. 3)
- Baseball fans can go to a link on the team Web site and, in the Quicklings section, make a donation with a credit card. Or mail a check payable to West Raleigh Youth Sports to 112 Airlie Ct., Cary, NC 27513.
- On Saturday, a car wash ($10 contribution) and doughnut sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the team's West Raleigh Exchange Club Park facility, located at 830 Barringer Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606.
- From 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, West Raleigh team parent Donna Thorpe, a licensed hairstylist, will provide $10 haircuts at the West Raleigh Clubhouse.
- Also Saturday, the league will offer a Fall Baseball Clinic from 1 to 5 p.m. with West Raleigh coaches and "special guests" as instructors. Walk-up registration will be available. Details will be posted on the team Web site.
- From 6 p.m. until midnight Saturday, West Raleigh Night will take place at Tony C's Pizza and Sports Pub (3460 Ten Ten Road in Cary, on the southeastern corner of Kildaire Farm and Ten Ten roads). The West Raleigh roster consists of 13 players chosen by the coaches of the organization's 10-team spring league. All-Star practice started in June, and the team advanced through district, state and regional tournaments in July.
