The Triangle Volleyball Club will send seven teams to Atlanta this summer to compete in the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships.
The first of the Morrisville-based club’s teams to qualify was Triangle 18 Black, which qualified in the 18 Open division by finishing third at the Big South National Qualifier in early April, the nonprofit club said in a news release announcing the bids.
The remaining six bids were earned at Carolina Region bid tournaments held in Greensboro on April 30. Qualifying in the National Division were Triangle 13 Black, Triangle 15 Black, Triangle 16 Black, Triangle 17 Black and Triangle 18 Blue. Triangle 14 Black qualified in the American Division.
The Carolina Region has two Junior National bids to award to teams at each age level from 13-and-under through 18-and-under. Triangle won six of those 12 bids, one at every age level, for a total of seven for the 2011 season.
In its nine years, the Triangle Volleyball Club has earned 43 bids to Junior Nationals, the most of any club in the region, the release said.
Triangle 12s team advances: The Triangle Volleyball Club also will send its first 12s team to a national championship when the Triangle 12 National plays in the AAU Girls Junior National Championships in Orlando, Fla., June 15-18.
Four Triangle 12s teams competed in the Carolina Region in 2011, and members tried out to make the nationals team, which is coached by Jenna Hinton and Katherine Fleming.
Making the team were Raleigh’s Gentry Benda, Bethany Salapek, Madison Phinney and Brianna Reid; Apex’s Gaby Romero and Avery Bugg; Chapel Hill’s Allison Gillespie and Grace Maggiore; Durham’s Anne Hudson; Franklinton’s Natalie Ferrell; and Wake Forest’s Kayla Resco.
