Triangle swimmers fare well at state senior meet

Triangle swimmers swept individual high-point honors and took four of the top eight places in the team competition at the N.C. Swimming Senior Short-Course Championships held Jan. 28-31 in Huntersville.

Victoria Mitchell, 17, of the Marlins of Raleigh-Wolfpack Aquatics won the women's MVP award with 127 individual points, and Dominick Glavich, 16, of the YMCA of the Triangle Area Swim Team won the men's award with 137 points.

Mitchell, winner of the 500, 1,000, 1,650 freestyles, became the third MOR swimmer to win the senior championships high-point award, coach Paul Silver said in a report on MOR's accomplishments.

Powerful SwimMAC Carolina of Mecklenburg County topped the overall team points standings with 1,089 points. Wake County's New Wave Swim Team was second with 768 points, followed by Star Aquatics of High Point (710), New South Swimming of Charlotte (691), YOTA (677), MOR (608), Hilton Head (S.C.) Aquatics (252) and the N.C. Aquatic Club of Chapel Hill (214).

Star Aquatics won the women's team title, followed by SwimMAC, MOR and New Wave.

The men's title went to SwimMAC, followed by New South, YOTA and New Wave.
 
MOR's Nicole Giamber, 16, place fourth in the women's individual standings with 85 points, behind runner-up Carolyn Blalock, 17, of the Waves of Wilmington (111) and Kathleen Baker, 12, of Star Aquatics (102). New Wave's Kelsey Moore, 14, was fifth, followed by Star's Faith Johnson, 15, and YOTA's Sabrina Benson, 16.

Glavish's YOTA teammate Matthew Taylor, 17, place fifth in the men's standings with 79 points, and YOTA's Joseph Bonk, 16, was eighth with 69 points. New South's Andreas Nilsson, 17, Brett Boston, 18, and Kurt Knop, 18, were second through fourth. Nathan Lile, 15, of Smoky Mountain Aquatic Club was sixth, and New South's John Newell, 16, was seventh.
