A women's rugby team from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and two men's teams from the Raleigh Rugby Football Club bowed out of their respective national tournaments over the weekend.
UNC women reach round of eight: The North Carolina women’s rugby club team reached the round of eight at the USA Rugby’s Division I national playoffs this past weekend.
The 11th-seeded Tar Heels team defeated No. 6 UC San Diego 12-10 on Friday in Blaine, Minn., then lost on Saturday to Army, 51-0.
UNC was one of 16 college women’s rugby clubs to advance to USA Rugby’s Division I playoffs. It was the Tar Heels’ third consecutive trip to the national tournament.
Raleigh men eliminated: The Raleigh Rugby Football Club's Raleigh Vipers trailed 26-3 but mounted a rally, but they couldn't catch the host Boston Irish Wolfhounds and lost their USA Competitive Region 4 Division I Playoffs match 33-22 on Saturday.
Twenty-six Vipers players and coaches traveled to Canton, Mass., for the match at the Irish Cultural Center. The Vipers finished with a 6-1 spring record, including a victory over the Potomac Athletic Club, a Super League team, and a closed loss to the Atlanta Super League team.
In addition to Boston, the other three top-seeded East Coast playoff teams won their round-of-32 matches. Norfolk routed Long Island 79-10, PAC defeated New York 27-13 and Mystic River stopped NOVA of Northern Virginia 27-17. The four winners advance to the May 21-22 round of 16 in Manassas Park, Va.
Raleigh U19s fall in regional final: The Raleigh Rugby Football Club's youth team also competed over the weekend. The Rattlesnakes went 2-1 in the USA Rugby Youth Division U19s tournament, losing 22-6 to the Naples (Fla.) Bears in the South Regional championship game at Sanford, Fla. The U19s will host Vance in their U19 league playoffs May 7 at the Raleigh Rugby Complex on Poole Road, about four miles east of the beltline. On May 8, the Rattlesnakes U14 team will host Chapel Hill U14.
