Slater takes victory in hometown Durham Senior Amateur golf tournament

Bookmark and Share

An eagle and three birdies on the back nine carried hometown golfer Don Slater to the championship of the inaugural Durham Senior Amateur golf tournament on Tuesday at Hillandale Golf Course in Durham.

Slater, who had entered the day in second place, finished the round with a 68 for a two-round total of 137 and a three-stroke victory over Larry Boswell of Jamestown and first-round leader Wayne Pyrtle of Burlington in the Senior Overall Division.

In the Super Senior Division for ages 65 and up, Ron Johnston of Chapel Hill shot a final-round 73 for a 145 total and a one-stroke victory over first-round leader Bob Rudolph of Raleigh, who shot a 75.

The course remained wet from heavy rain over recent days and played longer than usual, tournament director Dink Andrews reported.

Eighty-six players entered the competition, Andews said.
