What a memorable May 13 for Raleigh's Paul Simson.
He will be inducted into the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame tonight fresh off winning his 22nd Carolinas Golf Association championship earlier in the day. (Check out the profile in Thursday's N&O.)
Simson, the defending champion, shot a final-round 69 to take a four-stroke victory and reclaim the N.C. Senior Amateur Championship at Forsyth Country Club in Winston Salem.
Simson, the only player to finish under par, shot a 1-under total of 212. Spike Smith of Pinehurst and Peter Allen of Southport shared second place at 216. Ron Carpenter of Creedmoor and Donald Slater of Durham tied for fourth at 217.
“This is turning into a really special day with this win,” Simson,
a 59-year-old insurance executive, said in a CGA news release. “I am going to remember this for a
very long time.”
The N.C. Senior victory was his fourth. Cliff Cunningham holds the record for N.C. Senior wins with six - in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001 and 2002.
