Parent-child tournament helps girls' trip to nationals

Bookmark and Share

Twenty-two parent-child teams turned out to compete in the Triangle Tarheels Basketball Club’s Mother-Daughter, Father-Daughter Tournament at Youngsville Elementary School in Youngsville.

The May 21 double-elimination, two-on-two competition, a fundraiser for the nonprofit team, featured girls ages 9-17 competing with a parent or a mentor, Tarheels coach Ahmad Smalls said.

Sarah Gutierrez, 10, and Susan Gutierrez of Raleigh won the seven-team mother-daughter bracket. Tori Hansen, 9, and Alice Hansen were second.

In the 15-team father-daughter bracket, Arrianna Hopkins, 10, teamed with Maurice Hopkins of Raleigh for the victory. Chantel Pair, 14, and Shannon White took second place.

Money raised will help fund the Tarheels’ fifth-grade team’s trip to the June 26-July 1 AAU Division I national tournament in Hampton, Va. The team compiled a record of 30-3 through the spring and placed third in the state tournament to qualify.

To help the team go to nationals, contact Smalls at 919-522-7975 or donate at www.triangletarheels.org.
