Women's sports opportunities include tackle football, baseball

Women's sports opportunities continue to expand in the Triangle.

In recent years, flag football leagues have grown to include coed and all-women competition. Now, women have the chances to play baseball and tackle football.

The Carolina Phoenix,  with a roster of players from the area that includes former N.C. State basketball player Terah James, open its Independent Women's Football League home schedule at 7 p.m. Saturday. ... 

Rugby team seeks travel help, plus news from Triangle golf, badminton, basketball and cycling

The Raleigh Vipers, the Raleigh Rugby Football Club’s Division 1 men’s team, is trying to raise $3,000 to help with travel and lodging expenses when the team competes in the Division I playoffs in Boston, starting with an April 30 game against the Boston Irish Wolfhounds.

Runners have plenty of race choices this weekend

The sound of the first footsteps on the course will be heard about 6 a.m. Saturday on a big day of running in the Triangle.

The early start on an April morning comes because the runners have a long way to go in the Umstead 100-Mile Endurance Run at Umstead Park. The field is full, but you can always cheer on the competitors.

State judo championship draws a crowd

One hundred twenty-eight competitors turned out for the Bushido Judo School's 11th annual Bushido Challenge and N.C. Judo State Championships on March 12 at the Central Children's Home in Oxford.

Bushido Judo School  won the team trophy and Fayetteville-Fort Bragg Judo finished second in the USA Judo- and North Carolina Judo-sanctioned competition, Sensei Andres Andreu reported.

Unbeaten Wildcats win Clayton basketball championship

The Wildcats 11- and 12-year-old team went undefeated in winning its
Clayton Parks and Recreation winter youth basketball championship.

Coached by Rich Haberkorn, the Wildcats (11-0) defeated the Red Storm
(8-3) with a come-from-behind 41-34 victory on Feb. 22 at the new
Clayton Community Center gymnasium, team representative Wayne Smoak
Reported. The Wildcats won their regular-season and tournament titles.

Eight age groups and tournaments in nine age divisions involved more
than 50 teams.

Spring brings summer camp registration

Many young recreational athletes throughout the Triangle train and practice in their sports year-round.

One way to get in some training is attending one of the many summer camps offered by public and private schools, colleges, nonprofit organizations and commercial enterprises.

Athletes even can take lessons from current and former professional players and coaches who make the Triangle their home.

Triangle residents passionate about their recreational sports

In her weekly Who’s Got Game column in the North Raleigh News and the Midtown Raleigh News, correspondent Teri Saylor takes a look at area competitors.

Coming Wednesday: Eric Gabriel of North Raleigh saw his active recreational sports participation end with knee trouble, a knee replacement and complications that left him with a steel rod in the leg. Then he made an extreme decision: He would have the bum leg removed. Now, he’s a competitive rower.

Now online: Athletes as young as 4 hit the mat for competition with the Capital City Wrestling Club. Sure, there are occasional tears, but even the little ones can compete in this sport, says club organizer Joe Cesari, a former N.C. State wrestler with an outstanding wrestling heritage.

Horses, teens and $20,000

The CORRAL Riding Academy raised more than $20,000 at its inaugural Gala Fundraiser held Feb. 19 at the Angus Barn Pavilion in Raleigh, the nonprofit organization announced this past week.

The money, which included more than $3,000 raised in the night’s silent auction, will be used in the treatment of at-risk and adjudicated teenage girls who are paired with rescued horses in the nonprofit organization’s riding and mentoring program.

Badminton national championships coming to Triangle

Big-time badminton is returning to the Triangle after almost 70 years.

The U.S. Senior National Championships will be played March 24-27 in Morrisville, hosted by the Triangle-based N.C. Badminton Club in conjunction with USA Badminton and the Southern Badminton Association.

Raleigh, Greensboro runners win St. Patty's 8K titles

Sarah Hogan, 26, of Raleigh ran to the women's title and Nick Liversedge, 27, of Greensboro was the overall winner at the third annual St. Patty's Run Green 8K road race held Saturday at Moore Square in downtown Raleigh.
