Track and field meets highlight area's young talent

 

Triangle track and field fans might just see some young stars of the future over the next 10 days.
 
Local-level Hershey's Track and Field Games meets are nearly completed throughout the region, and the top finishers advance to district competition in hopes of reaching the state meet and even the national championships.

Golf tournament will benefit Upper Room Christian Academy

The Upper Room Christian Academy Annual Fund Tournament will be held at 8:30 a.m. June 4 at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on N.C. State's Centennial Campus in Raleigh.

Parent-child tournament helps girls' trip to nationals

Twenty-two parent-child teams turned out to compete in the Triangle Tarheels Basketball Club’s Mother-Daughter, Father-Daughter Tournament at Youngsville Elementary School in Youngsville.

The double-elimination, two-on-two competition, a fundraiser for the nonprofit team, featured girls ages 9-17 competing with a parent or a mentor, Tarheels coach Ahmad Smalls said.

Slater repeats as Durham Senior Amateur golf champion

Defending champion Don Slater of Durham shot a 68 that included a double eagle on the par-5 14th hole and finished with a two-day, 6-under-par 136 to win the Senior Division and overall titles at the Durham Senior Amateur Golf Championship on Tuesday at Hillandale Golf Course.

In the Super Senior Division, Dave Robinson of Burlington rallied from five shots back for the victory.

Hole-in-one highlights first round of Durham Senior Amateur

Donnie Bass of Durham had the shot of the day Monday during the Durham Senior Amateur Golf Championship's first round, hitting a hole-in-one on the 170-yard No. 17 at the Hillandale Golf Course.

Triangle Volleyball Club teams advance to nationals

The Triangle Volleyball Club will send seven teams to Atlanta this summer to compete in the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships.

The first of the Morrisville-based club’s teams to qualify was Triangle 18 Black, which qualified in the 18 Open division by finishing third at the Big South National Qualifier in early April.

The remaining six bids were earned at Carolina Region bid tournaments held in Greensboro on April 30.

MOR-Wolfpack Aquatics eighth at UltraSwim

Marlins Of Raleigh-Wolfpack Aquatics swimmers produced 148 points and finished eighth out of more than 200 teams at the May 12-15 Charlotte UltraSwim Grand Prix Meet at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, MOR coach Paul Silver said.

The USA Swimming event, with prize money of surpassing $50,000, drew Olympians including Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones, Ryan Lochte and Natalie Coughlin.

Playoffs determine Keith Hills Amateur golf champions

Zak Drescher of Landisville, Pa., won a three-hole playoff and took home title at the Keith Hills Amateur Golf Championship played Saturday and Sunday at the Keith Hills Golf Club in Buies Creek.

Drescher won the playoff against Roy Dixon of Salisbury and James Harris of Lillington. Each finished two rounds at 1-under-par 143.

It came down to Drescher and Dixon on the final two playoff holes. (Complete results below.)

Raleigh gymnast tumbles way to seventh place at nationals

Raleigh gymnast Sydney Snead placed seventh in the nation this past weekend and earned a chance to work with one of the legends of gymnastics.

Snead competed in the Junior A all-around competition at the Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships in Long Beach, Calif.

Level 10 is the highest level before Elite (Olympic) competition in gymnastics.

North Raleigh RedHawks win youth rugby championships

Two North Raleigh Youth Rugby RedHawks teams took home Carolina Cup championships on Saturday.

The RedHawks' U12 Tackle and U12 Touch teams, part of the North Carolina Youth Rugby Union, won their divisions during the rugby 7's tournament hosted by the Raleigh Rugby Football Club at the Raleigh Rugby Football Complex on Poole Road.
