Garner Road Bulldogs win AAU 15U national basketball title

The Triangle is known for its outstanding basketball, and not just the basketball played by its college teams.

The latest team enhancing the area's reputation is the Garner Road Bulldogs 15-and-under boys AAU team. The Bulldogs, coached by Dwayne West, won the 15U championship of the Disney Super Showcase National Tournament played July 20-23 at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The Bulldogs, North Carolina's state AAU and USSSA champions, won the championship with a 59-50 victory over Nike-sponsored Martin Brothers Select, a team from Iowa.

Garner Road, which won all eight of its games in pool and bracket play, defeated the New York Gauchos 70-45 in the semifinals.

The invitation-only competition involved 76 15U teams from around the nation. Coaches from N.C. State, South Carolina, East Carolina, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Ohio State and Minnesota turned out for the Bulldogs games, said West, whose younger brother is NBA All-Star David West of the New Orleans Hornets, a former Garner High School star who also works with the Bulldogs players.
