Middle-distance competitor DeJah Jones, 12, of Garner ran to victory in the girls Sub-Youth Division 800-meter run in the AAU Junior Olympics on Wednesday.
Jones finished in a time of 2 minutes, 17 seconds, bettering her preliminaries time of 2:18.28.
Runner-up Kelsie Schwartz of St. Clair Shores, Mich., finished in 2:17.42.
The competition, which runs Aug. 1-8, is taking place at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Jones will compete in the 1,500 today, her mother, Renee Pinkney, said late Wednesday. Jones is seeded third with a time of 4:54.41, behind Philadelphia's Jai Franks (4:51.04) and Schwartz (4:54.29).
In the 400-meter dash Sub-Youth preliminaries Sunday, Jones ran 57.04 and is seeded No. 1 for Saturday's finals. She is seeded sixth for Saturday's 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:14.08.
