In what is very accurately called a grassroots effort, more than 1,000 tee times are up for public bid, giving recreational golfers in the Carolinas a chance to play some elite private courses.
The foursome rounds - which can make great Father's Day or Mother's Day gifts - are being auctioned at Rounds4Research.com.
The purpose of the April 7-21 auction is to raise money for golf turfgrass research, which includes outstanding research programs at N.C. State and Clemson, according to an event news release.
More than 650 courses - including more than 400 in the Carolinas, plus the rest mainly in Georgia, Virginia and Texas - have pledged tee times totaling more than 900.
The list of courses includes such elite facilities as Pinehurst No. 2, Greensboro's Sedgefield Country Club, Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, S.C., and Georgia's East Lake Golf Club, plus others ranked among the best 100 in the country by Golf Digest magazine.
