Classes and camp can help young wrestlers learn the moves

Triangle athletes have a great chance to learn from a member of wrestling's Cesari family.

Former N.C. State standout Joe Cesari, son of the iconic Pennsylvania
high school coach by the same name, offers camps and instruction
through the Capital City Wrestling Club.

The younger Joe Cesari is the program director of the Capital City
Wrestling Club and its AAU youth wrestling program. The North Raleigh
club has 68 wrestlers in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Capital Area organization seeks bowlers to step into leadership roles

Recreational sports are more than fun and games.

A crucial part of any recreational sports organization is good
leadership, especially from those who step up to help lead their fellow
competitors and make leagues run smoothly.

The Capital Area USBC Association
is seeking bowlers to step up to serve on its board of directors or to
run for positions with the Capital Area USBC Youth Committee,
association representative Marion Boissiere said.

LPGA stars will join Executive Women's Golf Association conference at Pinehurst

LPGA stars Annika Sorenstam, Suzann Pettersen and Kristy McPherson will
be just down the road in Pinehurst Resort next week, and about 400
recreational golfers from across North America will watch and learn
from those players and other golf notables.

The recreational golfers will be the participants in the EWGA Golfpalooza, formerly known as the Executive Women’s Golf Association's annual conference.

The event at Pinehurst Resort will be hosted Wednesday through Saturday by the recently formed EWGA Sandhills Chapter.

Free golf lessons and goodies await on Play Golf America Day at TPC Wakefield Plantation

Free golf instruction and free goodies! Those are things to like.

And if you've sort of been interested in golf but never gave it a try, this is an ideal opportunity to learn about the game.

More than 20 Carolinas PGA professionals will be giving 10-minute
lessons and free clinics, and the first 500 registrants receive a free
goody bag during the Carolinas PGA Play Golf America Day  on Monday at TPC Wakefield Plantation.

Chapel Hill golfer leads sectional qualifying for Carolinas Mid-Amateur

Chapel Hill's Pete Seagroves III is heading for the Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship.

Seagroves shot a 1-over-par 73 in Monday's sectional qualifying
tournament at Pinecrest Country Club in Lumberton to win medalist
honors and a place in the 30th annual Carolinas Mid-Amateur.

The
Mid-Amateur, conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association, will be
played April 16-18 at Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.

Senior golfers tee off for Down East Tour season

Senior golfers in the Triangle have several choices for tournament competition.

Among the options is the Down East Senior Amateur Tour, which finally
had some good weather Monday to get its season going with a tournament
at Southern Wayne Country Club in Goldsboro, tour organizer Bill Stone
reported. (Top finishers are below.)

Raleigh golfers lead sectional qualifying for Carolinas Mid-Amateur

Jeff Manley of Raleigh shot a par 72 to earn medalist honors and
Raleigh's Kevin Duerr shot a 74 to finish second Monday at Devils Ridge
Golf Club in Holly Springs in sectional qualifying for the 30th
Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship.

Twenty-five players (the list is below) advanced to the Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship,
which will be played April 16-18 at Furman University Golf Club in
Greenville, S.C.

Deadline April 16 for Western Wake Tennis Association scholarship applications

A little more than two weeks remain for young tennis players in western
Wake County to expand their skills and their educations.

April 16 is the deadline for applications for the Western Wake Tennis Association Scholarship Program.

Elementary, middle and high school students can apply for scholarships
for summer tennis camps, and graduating seniors can apply for academic
scholarships toward their first year in college.

Raleigh competitors take men's and women's Oxford 5K titles

Jarett Prady of Raleigh just missed setting the course record again,
but he still took home his third victory in four years in the Oxford
Relay For Life 5K on Saturday in Oxford.

Prady, 34, of Raleigh, was timed in 17:06 – just nine seconds slower
than his course record set three years ago. He also won in 2008.

The course record did fall in the women's race. Cheryl Peterson, 38, of
Raleigh finished in 23:00, breaking the record by three seconds.

Raleigh runner sets record for third straight year in winning Kinston 8K race

Raleigh's Devin Swann set the course record for the third year in a row
Saturday in the Kinston 8,000: Run for the River in Kinston, and
Heather Magil of Wilmington won the women's title for the third
straight year.

Breaking records was the order of the day. The 279 registered
participants produced a record field, and each of the top three
finishers ran under the 25-minute mark.

Swann covered the downtown course in 24 minutes flat for his third
consecutive victory. Raleigh's John Crews finished in 24:06, and Frank
Finney of Blowing Rock was third in 24:49.
