10U Tarheels win girls basketball tournament

The host Triangle Tarheels defeated the Greensboro Gaters 35-28 to win the five-team Triangle Invitational girls 10-and-under AAU basketball tournament played Saturday at Long Mill Elementary School in Youngsville, coach Ahmad Smalls said.

Sarah Gutierrez led the Tarheels with nine points; Kayla Surles, Alissa Smalls and Aniya Thigpen had six each; Cheyene Rogers had four; and Keenan Surles and Yvonna Smith had two each.

Also participating in the preseason tournament were two other teams from the area - the Franklinton Lady Knight and the Bunn Lady Ballers - plus the Mountain State Magic of West Virginia.
