Katherine Mellen Charron, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of History at NC State University, will speak at the Burwell School Historic Site in Hillsborough Wednesday, April 20, at 7 p.m. She co-edited with David Cecelski Recollections of My Slavery Days by William Henry Singleton. The lecture is sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council and is free to the public.
William Henry Singleton was a former slave and Union Army veteran. In 1922, he pubished an autobiography, describing life in North Carolina during the Civil War period. Among other things, this talk will consider the issue of memory (Singleton's memoir was written 57 years after the end of the war) and how we remember things.
