Wolff asks Czajkowski to quit Chapel Hill mayor's race

Bookmark and Share

In an ad in tomorrow's Chapel Hill News, mayoral candidate Kevin Wolff calls on fellow candidate and current council member Matt Czajkowski to withdraw from the race.

"If you want another moderate voice on Town Council then ... Please join me in asking Matt to please drop out of the race for mayor of Chapel Hill and to support Kevin Wolff for Mayor of Chapel Hill," the ad reads.

Woff has run for mayor twice before, winning about 30 percent of the vote. But he was largely silent in those bids, attending few forums. He now says with just 5 percent more votes, he can win in the four-person field. With law, business and engineering degrees he says he's the best candidate.

Czajkowski, who has two years on his council term, has been ineffective, rarely getting a second on his motions and failing to make allies, Wolff says. "Matt will remain ineffective, even as a mayor."

"In fact given his lack of progress in the past two years, without me to help bridge the gap between him and the other town council members, Matt will continue to  be ignored and unable to gain support for his initiatives."

Wolff can only see see himself as mayor?

How presumptuous! Why didn't Kevin Wolff run for one of the numerous council seats? He's a legend in his own mind. Why should someone who has actually WON an election withdraw for a candidate who is a multiple loser?

Matt Czajkowski represents hitherto unrepresented in Chapel Hill

Matt Czajkowski's one-vote stands vs. the unrepresentative bloc that has considered itself the voice of Chapel Hill is exactly why many will vote for the candidates who will represent the real diversity in Chapel Hill.
Matt Czajkowski listens to many viewpoints and votes sensibly. Chapel Hill needs most a Mayor and Council who will direct our tax dollars wisely. Most notably, he voted against huge unpredictable costs for lifetime health insurance for town officials that the rest of the town officials voted for.
Czajkowski is not arrogant, does not call himself the only "moral" candidate nor the only candidate who represents our "values."
Czajkowski will make our town process more consistent, predictable and fair-minded, for a more reasonable municipal tax base that can offer more goods and services here to Chapel Hill residents - in short, Czajkowski offers us a more representative municipality in many ways.

Who Matt represents

One need not look far to see who Matt represents nor to see that that "bloc" is largely a rhetorical tweek by BS (above). Matt squeeked onto Council in a race carrying only a couple of precincts. See http://www.forthgo.com/blog/2007/11/07/chapel-hill-2007-town-council/ The other members of Council in that race and in the previous race had much broader support and many more votes.

Attempting to create a silent majority for Matt if a futile enterprise. Like a broken 24 hour clock, Kevin Wolff is right on at least one count; Matt has been ineffective on Council.

Why? Matt likes to run but not to govern. He had not voted in local elections prior to 2007. He had not been involved in any community government efforts or committees. He rarely displays any knowledge of the complex materials set before Council. And he has not attempted to build any partnerships or coalitions.

My, my

The incredibly detailed and hateful "analysis and opinion" of a threatened group aka the status quo.  I smell fear.

This indeed is going to be an interesting election.

Matt is a liberal

Despite what Kevin Wolff or anyone else says, Matt meets John F. Kennedy's definition of a liberal "if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties." (speech given September 14, 1960)

Using this definition and not some arbitrary measurement, Matt is as liberal as any of the sitting members of the town council.

This isn't the first time Kevin Wolff has made the suggestion that Matt pull out of the race. I believe it was the Sierra Club's forum where he used this ploy first.

Matt's affiliation (politically)

Matt is and has been according to voting records unaffiliated with any party. While he may feel and speak by your definition of liberal. He had no civil contributions prior to his running for Council in 2007. Hardly up to the JFK definition -- even if he is a fine person and if Kevin Wolff is wrong about Matt's politics

Hmmm

"Unaffiliated with any party".  You say that like it is a bad thing.  Maybe it is real "change".

Perhaps you could offer him some goose-stepping lessons if you want him to "be affiliated".

reductio ad Hitlerum

invoking Godwin's Law on e-Boy77

Uhh

As you seem to be into Wikipedia, you should check out "goose step" there, since you appear to be ignorant of the history of the term.

newsflash: I needed just 5% more too

newsflash: With just five percent more of the vote, I would have been elected Mayor of Chapel Hill in the 1979 three-person field. But I didn't get it.

Were you a conservative

Running against liberals?  Otherwise this is no comparison.

Well??

If not, this is 30 year old sour grapes, turned into whine.

you missed the point

I was being satirical. But yes, I was running against the liberals, but from the other side of the Chapel Hill spectrum.

Those silly Chapel Hillians !!!

Chapel Hill politics makes a Jr High student council election seems professional by comparison.
