Mayoral candidate Mark Kleinschmidt asked Matt Czajkowski at Sunday's NRG forum why he didn't vote in local elections before 2007. Kleinschmidt said he learned the importance of civic participation when he came to UNC, his adopted hometown of 21 years, and has voted since he was eligible.
Czajkowski said at 18 he was serving in the Navy. "I think I have my [civic] credentials," he said, then offered this answer.
"I was like 85 percent of the people in this town, which is really a shame," he said. "I was disengaged. At the end of the day I didn't care too much because all in all life was pretty good."
He said that changed one day when he took his kids to Ben and Jerry's on West Franklin Street. He felt uncomfortable eating outside with them. (Note: The bench outside the store is a frequent gathering spot for street people; we did a story a while back about a former police chief's suggestion to make benches less comfortable so people would not recline on them.) Czajkowski contrasted the scene with being able to eat ice cream on the rocking chairs outside Mapleview.
Kleinschmidt is appealing to principles on the campaign trail: inclusivity, civic involvement, repeated references to his being the candidate who best represents Chapel Hill's historic values. Czajkowski is telling stories and appealing to people's pocketbooks (i.e., his calls for a two-year freeze on the town tax rate and a second look at town employee health benefits).

Somebody just sent me
Fri, 10/23/2009 - 14:29 — ClaudiusSomebody just sent me this link for a petition on the selection of Bill Strom's replacement. Sure makes sense to me (and a lot of other Chapel Hill voters evidently).

Matt CZ wants to turn CH into Durham...?
Fri, 10/23/2009 - 09:43 — ignc73"* Commit to developing new sites for additional retail.
* Proactively solicit the interest of nationwide retailers and retail developers.
* Ensure that the processes for bringing in new business are as efficient as possible."
- Matt Cz
"People experience a much more business-friendly attitude today from Durham,” he said. “We’ve got to change that."
- Matt Cz
Durham is a dump. Durham is a nightmare mess of anything goes development. Chapel Hill is the polar opposite. If Durham-esque sprawl and big box stores is Matt CZ's answer to commercial development, he can keep it.
Kleinschmidt has my vote.
Keep thinking Durham is a dump
Fri, 10/23/2009 - 13:51 — elvisboy77It will leave more room for those of us who go there to shop and enjoy the many artistic venues and restaurants.
Just keep doing your shopping and entertainment in Chapel Hill. Good luck finding any.
"Durham is a dump."
Fri, 10/23/2009 - 11:18 — TerryDiddleAnother elitist CH NIMBY heard from.
The folks who want to keep
Fri, 10/23/2009 - 09:59 — pmcgahanThe folks who want to keep the same self-dealing people in charge of the Chapel Hill Town Council continually use slander and gross generalizations to describe their opponents.
Here are the facts:
The Chapel Hill voters are on the verge of sweeping out the very people who tried to pass virtually free lifetime healthcare benefits for themselves without any public comment.
Anyone who voted for Bill Strom's lifetime healthcare should be kicked out of office.
He's been voting for himself
Thu, 10/22/2009 - 19:11 — ActLocalI'm glad to hear that Mark K is such an avid voter in local elections. He has been actively casting his vote for himself and his cronies. I am more concerned about the votes that he has been casting as an elected council member, many of which I find appalling. I hope after this election, he continues voting in local elections and STOPS voting as a member of the town council.
Mr. Schultz - You're too obvious
Thu, 10/22/2009 - 10:37 — TerryDiddleEven the headline to this article is biased.
INCLUSIVITY.....HUH???
Wed, 10/21/2009 - 22:41 — PostalTo hold Kleinschmidt up as the model of inclusiveness is disingenuous. With all due respect to the extraordinary amount of time he and others on the Council have given and the dedication to public service they have shown, there are thousands of folks in the community who feel their values, opinions and concerns have not been considered in decisions made on their behalf. And no, I'm not rich. And yes, I care about the homeless and the other groups less fortunate than the rest of us. And yes, I care about the environment and favor green measures that are reasonable and economically smart. I'm just a regular citizen who shares the "progressive" values Chapel Hill is known for, but also wants to balance our social consciousness with some practical and responsible fiscal planning and management. And like Cz, I voted in all the national elections, but few local ones. Not because I didn't care, but that I felt the Town was being managed by folks who knew better than I did what was best for the Town. Recent actions of the Council and chaned economic circumstances have forced me to rethink that assumption.
What Cho said
Tue, 10/20/2009 - 21:29 — RedWhiteBlueThe question and the answer that followed was even more damning.
Cho asked something like:
"I am chairman of the Transportation Board. In the past we had a dutiful Council contact who came to every meeting that he could and would contact me when he could not attend. That was Ed Harrison.
Two years ago we were assigned a new Council contact. We never saw or heard from that person. He attended only one meeting. One that drew a large crowd. Now he cites his membership on our Board as signaling his expertise on Transportation issues.
That person is Matt Czajkowski.
Matt, could you expain this?"
Czajkowski: "I understood that being a Council member is a part time job."
See the video once posted at http://www.nrg-nc.net/
Technology Committee
Wed, 10/21/2009 - 11:58 — tbucknerMark Kleinschmidt was the council rep for the town's Technology Advisory Committee (before it was disbanded). In the 3 years I was a member of that committee, Mark K attended 1 meeting and still left early. Toward the end, when it became obvious that the committee was not engaging the council, Mark met privately with a couple of us, but took no public stand to try and help us save the committee.
There are many, many advisory boards and very few council members. I don't imagine the Transportation and Technology Committee's are unique in not having frequent participation by the council rep.
Part-timer
Wed, 10/21/2009 - 18:25 — RedWhiteBlueCzajkowski: "I understood that being a Council member is a part time job."
BTW The Technology committee failed because the members could never learn to cooperate to reach a single goal. Every member of that committee is responsible. Including you.
Red-white-blowhard
Wed, 10/21/2009 - 19:40 — elvisboy77It IS a part time job. I am sure he has a full time job, too- in the for profit world. Ever been there? It, too is demanding in case you have not.
Maybe skipping the meetings because it was just another "cause" shows good time management, ever think of that? If you have ever worked for a real company then you do.
I mean, a "transportation board" in a town with FREE transportation? What are the "mission critical"decisions that need to be made? Diesel vs Biodiesl? Please. I would have skipped out, too.
Do your homework, El-Bo
Thu, 10/22/2009 - 06:22 — RedWhiteBlueAnyone who is supporting Czajkowski should know that he lists his current position as "Retired executive" on his profile. He has more time than any other Council person.
And Czajkowski rode into office, with a very thin margin, on his bicycle advocacy. He made a promise to ride his bike to every Council meeting. He dramatically placed his bike helmet in front of him at every meeting (for a short while). He insisted on being on the Transportation Committee to advocate for bikes and other clean transportation.
He attended one meeting. He proposed no changes or improvements. He still lists transportation as one of his main areas of interest and expertise.
Is your homework done?
Thu, 10/22/2009 - 18:49 — elvisboy77I ask my kids that all the time, too.
Being retired does not mean having nothing to do.
And being on a transportation board in a town where it is "free" aka taxpayer funded sounds like another gerbil wheel to me, and probably to him.
I hope Matt C gets elected Mayor. Chapel Hill needs someone with some responsibility, transparency and common sense. I don't see that in Kleinschmidt, he has spent too much time in the non-profit, everything is free and happy world.
Here's hoping enough taxpayers wake up and realize that the time for "change" is now.
Rich People for Czajkowski
Tue, 10/20/2009 - 19:57 — rectormswHe he ... sorry if a story about how your candidate was spurred into political action by having to say, "sorry, not today" to a homeless man doesn't show him in the most favorable light.
Yeah, right - more like
Tue, 10/20/2009 - 20:18 — elvisboy77It was not a story but a shameless plug for the editor's preferred candidate. Read it again assuming you have the skills to comprehend it.
The real story is that there are a lot of "Normal regular" people for Czajkowski. If it is okay to be assaulted like this then one must ask, what have you personally done to help the pan handlers? Certainly you have a better idea.
Deafening Silence coming...
Horribly biased reporting

I think you should save this type of opinion for your personal blogsite and not your employer's.
This is a bit over the top.
WOW! You're right
Tue, 10/20/2009 - 20:32 — TerryDiddleThis is NOT reporting - it's a campaign ad for Kleinschmidt.
Thanks. I've now been
Thu, 10/22/2009 - 08:35 — mschultz (author)Thanks. I've now been accused of supporting Matt Czajkowski and of supporting Mark Kleinschmidt. The point of this post was an observation based on three forums I've attended. Kleinschmidt is talking in more abstract terms. Czajkowski is talking in more concete and economic terms.
well, you should have said
Thu, 10/22/2009 - 08:41 — pmcgahanwell, you should have said it in the article.
I guess it is time
Thu, 10/22/2009 - 18:53 — elvisboy77For voters to decide between "abstractions" and reality. Hopefully they will chose reality. Kleinschmidt has not proven himself to be a leader in anything in spite of being on the council many years more than Matt.
