Bad weather forced the anti-tax group Americans for Prosperity to postpone plans to sail a hot-air balloon reading "Global Warming Alarmism: Lost Jobs, Higher Taxes, Less Freedom" over John Edwards' Orange County estate.Â
Dallas Woodhouse, N.C. director of the national grassroots group, said the stunt was designed to point out what he sees as Edwards' hypocrisy: calling for reduced energy consumption while living in a 28,000-square-foot house.
It's part of a nationwide "Hot Air Tour" sponsored by Americans for Prosperity that also has sent the same balloon over Al Gore's large Tennessee home.
A spokeswoman for the Edwardses released a statement from the couple calling the demonstration a "sad attempt to throw political mud" and noting that the house does get some of its energy from solar panels.
Woodhouse pointed to an Edwards quote from a Democratic presidential debate last year at Drexel University: "We're going to have to be willing to sacrifice. If we love this country enough, we're going to have to conserve, in our homes, in our workplaces, and alter our behavior to make America what it is capable of being."
âWe are traveling the nation to highlight the âhot airâ that comes out of so many politiciansâ mouths when it comes to global warming,â Woodhouse in a news release.
âNobody better represents the âhot airâ in the global warming debate than John Edwards, who traveled the state proposing much higher taxes and regulations on average citizens while be built a massive energy-guzzling house in Orange County.â
Woodhouse and AFP are skeptical that human activity causes global warming. They view it as a scare tactic used to increase regulation and raise taxes that will have a negative impact on the economy.
Woodhouse said he hopes a secondary benefit of the balloon ride, if and when it happens, is to hearten people who are skeptical about the severity of global warming.
"You're not a kook because you don't believe in it and you're concerned about the high cost of energy and increased regulation," Woodhouse said.
The Edwardses want it to have the opposite effect.
"We are proud that our home is an Energy Star house, the best rating possible, and that their hot air balloon ride will give them a view of the solar panels that we already have in place," the statement read.
"In addition, we have been working with Carolina Solar Energy to design the additional solar panel (PV) system to complement what is already in place. We have made it a priority for our family to create a very fuel efficient home and hope that this sad attempt to throw political mud will draw even more attention to the issue of global warming and the need for all Americans to take steps to limit their energy usage.â

Is English your second language?
Sat, 07/12/2008 - 13:15 â DebrahUnfortunately for Anonymous 7:10, she parrots what has already been said--and said better--as if there is a revelation in the mix.
LOL!
I noted very clearly that Jackson's crude comments will only help Obama. Even before this latest controversy, Obama has carefully avoided being seen with either Jackson or Sharpton to keep from being associated with their caustic race-baiting fringe.
There is no great mystery here.
You guys keep dreaming. In order for Obama to get elected and subsequently govern, he will move to the center.
Squarely toward the center.
He's smart and he's a politician and he will not allow some of these dried-up former John Edwards hacks steer him off course.
And I will repeat, the people commenting on this post were most certainly rabid former supporters of Edwards.....
.........which is why Anonymous 7:10 continues to hide behind "anonymous".
GOL!
Anonymous loony attacks
Fri, 07/11/2008 - 16:17 â DebrahAs I have said before, these same leftist nuts show up on every fora with the same robotic rhetoric.
Anonymous (12:53) isn't even intelligent enough to alter her style of writing.
I have been an Obama supporter for quite some time now, and I must say with glee how wonderful it is to see him moving to the center away from the leftist fringe.
One could not have a better enemy than Jesse Jackson on the way to the White House. Â LIS!
So gratifying to watch the unwashed masses feverishly jump on board the Obama train after having employed such lack of foresight to support either Hillary Clinton or John-Boy Edwards.
So hilarious to see them scramble.
LOL!!!
the myth of Obama moving from left
Sat, 07/12/2008 - 08:53 â marcoplosAside from the fact that there has been a great deal of projection by progressives on Obama, he has never been far from the center-right. He is a corporate Democrat in the Clinton mold, which makes him a member of that elite club that includes almost all members of both parties that support "free" trade, imperial warmaking, erosion of Constitutional rights, the death penalty, nuclear power, etc. An Obama administration would be civilized like lethal injection rather than the beheading style that we know see.
CW is Not Knowledge
Sat, 07/12/2008 - 07:10 â Anonymous (not verified)Actually, I have been an Obama supporter for a very long time. Unfortunately for you, he is not tacking right. His positions remain consistent.Â
The fact that you believe Obama is moving to the right shows that you have no real knowledge beyond the silly conventional wisdom that the MSM spews.Â
And BTW the Jesse Jackson silliness will help Obama.Â
How sad for Americans that the media dwelt on that incident, rather than the week of horrendous screw-ups by the McCain campaign (which is mirroring its candidate -- confused, pandering, condescending) which, if committed by any other candidate than Saint McCain, would've doomed the candidate to defeat.
Reality: Try It Some Time
Thu, 07/10/2008 - 12:53 â Anonymous (not verified)Debrah definitely lives on another plane and not reality. She has all the right wing memes down pat: Al Gore is fat! John Edwards is a pretty boy! Too bad she can't supply any factual information or contribute anything substantive. Name calling is not an argument, dear Debrah.
The argument that John Edwards can't live the American Dream in his nice house and still argue for action against climate change is ludicrous. I suppose FDR should not have cared a whit about poor people because he was rich.
Silly people. Give up relying on right wing radio nutcases for your opinions. Try reality for a change.
Both Al Gore and John-Boy
Thu, 07/10/2008 - 10:32 â DebrahBoth Al Gore and John-Boy Edwards are two examples---in bold relief---of wusses gone awry.
Poor Al Gore really thinks that he won the 2000 election and has since consoled himself inside every doughnut shop he can find.
It's nice that he has Leo DiCaprio in his "green" corner of the world.
Gore and Edwards live a very decadent lifestyle as they preach to others about the environment, etc...... ad nauseum.
Such a relief to have John Edwards and his "Mammy" Elizabeth off the political stage. What insipid, phony drones!

What's the difference bewteen Rush Limbaugh and the Hindenburgh?
One is a flaming Nazi gas-bag and the other is a dirigible.
The sheer irony is amazing
Thu, 07/10/2008 - 00:56 â cybercitizen (not verified)(1) The AFP people are burning propane, contributing to the global warming they deny. (2) They are on the wrong side of both science and history. (3) The increased frequency of thunderstorms and windstorms is a product of global warming. Thus, the very effects of global warming may be staring AFP in the face, refuting them physically, and blowing their plans off-course!
Scientists say that the North African Desert is expanding because of global warming, and the conflict in Darfur is partly caused by desertification. When North Africa turns desert, and Bangladesh, Micronesia, parts of India, and the Netherlands become flooded, will these AFP people open their homes to those made homeless?
Wrong God again for the Wingnuts?

Sounds like the leader Dallas needs to switch Gods and get one that will shine the solar light on Senator Edwards Planation.
