Walk for Education Saturday in Chapel Hill

Thousands of students, parents and staff are expected to walk down Franklin Street Saturday for the 12th Annual Walk for Education. The walk ends with a carnival at Lincoln Center, the district’s offices on Merritt Mill Road.

The walk and a race that morning are designed to demonstrate community support for education, engage participants in physical activity and raise funds for the schools. An added feature this year will be the celebration of the district’s 100th anniversary. Special Centennial T-shirts will be awarded to students who raise $25 or more for their schools. To donate, go to chccs.k12.nc.us/psf and click on Donate Now.

The walk begins at 3 p.m. from McCorkle Place (the quad across from the downtown post office) on the UNC campus and will be led by the Carrboro High School band. There is no registration for the walk; everyone is welcome.

Shuttles will run for walk participants from both Culbreth and Phillips middle schools and then back from Lincoln Center to those schools and McCorkle Place. Parking is extremely limited at Lincoln Center, and due to congestion last year that impeded the shuttles, parking on Merritt Mill Road will be curtailed.

The walk will be preceded by the Race for Education which begins at 9 a.m. at McCorkle Place. The race course winds through the UNC campus. Runners can register at Fleet Feet Sports in Carr Mill Mall or by going to SPORToften.com by clicking here. Registration is also available Saturday morning before the race begins.
