Our post yesterday on the Lexus driver who rolled down her window to toss her cigarette butt on Chapel Hill's Franklin Street is closing in on 1,100 reads.

Many smokers think cigarette butts are biodegradable, but they are NOT. They also think they are too small to make a difference. Both of these are extremely ignorant beliefs. It is personal responsibility that should prevail - if you must smoke, you must be responsible for the consequences, including what to do with the butt when you're done. Yes, it's inconvenient. Yes, they stink. Sometimes I have to keep them in my pocket, in the pack, etc...and the smell is terrible. But the alternative is unacceptable, and no one else should be responsible for your choices!
So there are some of us out there that don't toss them out the window or on the ground, and are aware of the issues. Now if only we could figure out a good alternative to putting them in the landfill...besides quitting. If we could quit (believe me I have tried desperately), we would...then there wouldn't be any butts to contend with in the first place!

I was once flamed quite vigorously by a smoker when I suggested there was something wrong with having the ground covered with butts around the "smoking entrance" of one of the buildings at UNC.

Thu, 07/31/2008 - 15:20 — belwoodMy son is a NCHP Trooper who at least once has ticketed a cigarette butt thrower (also in a big fancy car, but a male) and was given a hard time by the litterer. At first, on hearing it, I thought it was a bit picky. Then a couple weeks later I read a letter to the editor (don't remember which paper) complaining that the cops don't ticket cigarette butt litterers. Then I thought, well, good for my son!!.. If someone doesn't want their car to smell like a cigarette butt, they shouldn't smoke in it. I guarantee their car smells like an ash tray whether they throw the butts out or not. So do their clothes. And their hair. And their hands. Tossed cigatettes and cigars have started a lot more than one forest or brush fire.

I can tell you first hand that we cleaned up hundreds of cigarette butts. Almost every step we took, we'd find another one. Not only that, but there were discarded cigarette packs and the plastic wrappers they come in, too. It gave me just one more reason to not like the habit of smoking or the inconsiderate people who throw their trash out their windows.
