The Chapel Hill Town Council formally accepted a $623,000 grant Tuesday from Orange County.
The grant will allow Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Town to convert a turf softball field at Cedar Falls Park to a synthetic surface athletic field suitable for multi-purpose use.
Adoption of Tuesday’s resolution also authorizes the town manager to apply for a $500,000 Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant, which would provide the required local match for the Orange County grant along with additional funds for the project.
The project will include demolition of the existing Cedar Falls Park No. 1 softball field and the installation of a synthetic turf field in place of the grass.
Renovation is planned for a portion of the parking lot, new fences, new site furnishings, Americans with Disabilities Act improvements and lights.
