the interesting thing

....to me is the implicit assumption that value always goes up.

"For instance one neighborhood may increase over four years by thirty percent while another only by five percent."

I would venture a guess that in some places values have indeed gone down as real estate "days on the market" have gone up. I think this spring will be very telling with regard to the condition of the housing market, the liquidity and elasticity of pricing.

I wonder if the county is interested in buying my house for what they have it appraised at? Can I lock that price in for the next four years? Especially considering that out here we have little to no county services.

Interesting read

It almost sounds like an apology.  There is even a mention of the 9/11 attacks!

This skirts the bottom line that many people (as evidenced by the large number of appeals) do not agree with the assessments foisted upon us.

I think Obama needs to eliminate the inclusion of taxes and insurance in monthly mortgage payments, (the TI in PITI).

If people had to write a check once a year for their property taxes I think there would be a lot more interest in how our tax money is spent.
