This came in too late to get into Wednesday's paper, but we want to get the word out. The fifth annual Bluegrass Marathon Jam to benefit Fisher House will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, starting at 1 p.m. and running for 12 straight hours at American Legion Post 6, 1714 Legion Road in Chapel Hill.
Musicians of all stripes are invited to sit in and play a spell, and everybody else is invited to come enjoy the music. Bluegrass tends to be the dominant genre -- the event was founded and organized by picker and writer John Santa, author of "Bluegrass is My Second Language" -- but there are no rules about that, and you never know what you might hear.
It's free to attend, but attendees are encouraged to donate to the kitty or, better yet, sign up to pledge a certain amount per hour of playing time. Everybody involved donates their time, and every penny raised goes to the North Carolina Fisher House, which provides low-cost housing and support for the families of service members undergoing medical treatment at the military hospitals at Camp Lejeune and Fayetteville.
