Honey's closing? Restaurant says it ain't so

By Virginia Bridges

Local residents worried about losing a Durham landmark can rest easy.

The owner of Honey’s Restaurant and the owner of its property at the intersection of Guess Road and Interstate 85 say the eatery that opened in 1960 as a drive-in restaurant is not going anywhere.

“If we are, I know nothing about it,” said Buck Dickerson, Honey’s owner.

Statements on a neighborhood listserv and social media have fueled a rumor that Honey’s is closing to make way for a gas station. Dickerson and his restaurant manager said that the rumor has concerned their staff and their regulars.

“It is frustrating to have people come in and say ‘Oh, this is your last month?’” Dickerson said.

Just to be sure, we checked with Edward Holmes, who owns the building.

“I am not aware of it being sold, and I would know about it,” Holmes said. The sale of the Honey’s site is not being considered, Holmes said.

So, there you go. Now, go grab a Honey’s pork chop or classic breakfast—served all day—for lunch, dinner or a midnight snack.

Chapel Hill Honey's

I remember the Chapel Hill Honey's at Glen Lennox, it still had drive in stalls in the late 60s.
