THIS STORY HAS BEEN UDPATED
The Elliott Road Peak Fitness is a sty. The AC doesn't work. Half the lockers are broken. Many of the treadmills don't work.
And come July, we're going to miss it.
Sue Stock reported earlier this week how the Charlotte-based Peak is closing seven gyms (Click here). But the story didn't mention our clubs in Chapel Hill and Durham. So I made some calls.
Laura Haid, vice president of operations, said the Elliott Road club will close by July 1. Members will be able to go to the Durham club on U.S. 15-501, at least for the time being. "To the best of my knowledge 15-501 will remain owned by Peak Fitness," Haid said. "That is not to say it couldn't change at a later date.
The other Chapel Hill club, on Farrington Road, is being resold to the person who owned it when it was Millennium Health & Fitness, according to a front desk person. Peak members will be able to go there at least for 90 days, she said. Membership there currently runs $24.95 a month.

Elliott Road Peak Fitness
Thu, 06/18/2009 - 20:31 — ktwCan it be true that no other club operator can be found for this site? It has a swimming pool - which makes it hard to imagine turning the space into a coffee shop, bookstore, or video store (for those of us who also miss the CH Visart). I really hate to think of the hundreds of former Elliott Road members who will now take their membership dollars out of Chapel Hill. There are only two choices for those on that side of town (three if one is a woman).
I would like to see the town's economic development efforts directed at a situation such as this one: attracting another club operator to an existing site.
