Cat's Cradle's Carrboro days numbered?

Bookmark and Share

A developer proposing the renovation of the Cat's Cradle's East Main Street shopping center urged the Carrboro Board of Aldermen to approve the project Tuesday night, saying any further delay could send Cradle owner Frank Heath packing. (Read our story here.)

"It's absolutely an integral part of our project," Laura Van Sant said in an interview Wednesday. "It is a fact he has landlords in Durham offering him free space."

But it's not clear that delaying the 300 East Main Street project would force the Cradle to leave Carrboro. In an e-mail statement, Heath said he gets regular inquiries about relocating the Cradle to a larger space in one of the Triangle's other cities.

"It can get a bit frustrating knowing that our current spot really is where this venue needs to stay, while also knowing that we could benefit from a larger space," Heath wrote.

When asked about Van Sant's claim he'd been offered rent-free space in Durham, Heath answered that it was more along the lines of booking shows elsewhere than a space of his own elsewhere.

From a competitive standpoint, the Cradle could benefit from a capacity larger than its current cap of around 600. Many acts bypass the Triangle for larger clubs such as Asheville's 940-capacity Orange Peel.

The 300 East Main Street project would transform the Carrboro strip shopping center housing the Cradle, The ArtsCenter and other businesses into four five-story buildings, a parking deck and pedestrian plaza.

The developers, most of whom are local, say they want to keep the existing tenants -- and Heath wants to keep the Cradle in Carrboro. Losing the Cradle, Vant Sant said, would be a major setback for the project.

"It's certainly a big fear for us," she said, "and we think it would be a big fear for the town."

Report accurate

We quote Van Sant making the "free space" comment in a Wednesday interview, not the Tuesday hearing, though that was her implication and she may have said it in remarks to reporters not captured in the minutes or on tape. We also took the next step in getting Heath to respond to the comment.

Thanks Mark....

Thanks for the update Mark.  So sorry to hear about the continuing loss of staff, trully sad.

Consider the source,

Mark.  Facts are optional for Orange Progressives, don't you know?

Unless of course it comes to a shameless plug for one's own blogsite, in which case one must get the URL correct.

Ultimately this will boil down to a business decision, which many Orange Progressives have no understanding of.

Inaccurate reports

If you see the developer's remarks at http://www.orangepolitics.org/2008/09/is-the-300-east-main-proposal-worth-supporting#comment-4334 (from the meeting minutes) you'll see that she said no such thing about the Cradle gettig offers of "free" space.

How is it that at least three independent reporters came to this conclusion? Were there other interviews or is this a mass misunderstanding?

Check the Replay...

Ruby, Carrboro has made it fairly easy to verify the statements since they posted the video here: http://www.ibiblio.org/toc/08/091608BoA.rm

You and I have been interviewed often enough by our local media to know they sometimes make a mistake.  I was interviewed recently about the Airport Authority by the DTH, going on at some length about moving AHEC to RDU, Faison's claims of millions of dollars of economic value, general aviation vs. UNC's stated usage, etc.  At some point I said if the choice was to build a general aviation facility supporting rich alumni and corporate jets, lots of private aviation and AHEC, I'd prefer a "small airport."  That came out as me wanting a small airport (LOL as my son and his friends would say).

My guess is that the Cat's Cradle is a well-known venue and pumping up that attribute of the story was kind of sexxy - catches the eye.

This project has been dragging on four years and from my Chapel Hill vantage, seems like it could be an OK deal for Carrboro.  At least it is human-scale, will require minimal tax dollars to develop and won't loom over the surrounding areas.  Also, it shouldn't accelerate gentrification or the end of any of Carrboro's neighborhoods (it'll be interesting to see its impact on Pine Knolls).

Unlike the Lot $5 mess (which is going to costs us millions more - wish the Council would come clean on the escalating cost of that project).

Anyway, the truth of the matter lies with the video (REALMEDIA): http://www.ibiblio.org/toc/08/091608BoA.rm

Construction

Construction of the new place will take over a year. He will have to move somewhere in the meantime. If he gets a good enough place he won't move back. He is already being recruited by Durham, which has a really cool downtown area, can Hillsborough be far behind? I don't know of any place in the Chapel Hill area that could house him.

Say It Aint So, Frank

PLEASE don't move the Cradle - its a historic landmark - we need to start a petition or something

Stop spreading developers' rumors & threats

The Cradle closed temporarily about 10 years ago when it last had to move spaces (which was the 2nd or 3rd time it has moved), so another delay for construction of an awesome space would certainly not be fatal.

Frank Heath already books shows at other venues all around the Triangle, it's annoying to see the developer mis-using this information as a threat in the Town's approval process. The fact is that the Cradle wouldn't be The Cradle if it was outside downtown Chapel Hill and Carrboro. I suspect Frank is well aware of that, but folks who are discussing this issue may not be.

The Cat's Cradle is an essential cultural anchor in this community, as is the Arts Center, and we should recognize and reward the value they bring us both artistically and economically.

My guess is

It will move to Hillsborough or Durham, both of which are up and coming vibrant communities.

How they could withstand shutting down long enough for construction is beyond me.

Maybe they can have another club in the new place going into Carrboro.
