Carrboro Aldermen Dan Coleman recently wrote to Sen. Kay Hagen on the board's behalf. Here is the letter:
Dear Senator Hagan,
I am writing on behalf of the Mayor and Alderman of the Town of Carrboro Board to urge you to give your full backing to the public option for health insurance sought by President Obama.
Municipal governments in North Carolina are struggling with double-digit annual increases in health insurance costs while county social services are hard-pressed to meet the needs of the uninsured and under-insured. We desperately need your help to achieve needed reform.
It is our belief that the health care crisis in the United States will ultimately only be solved by a single-payer national system. We encourage you, for the sake of the citizens of North Carolina and the nation, to do all you can to achieve such a system.
Yours,
Dan Coleman
Dan Coleman, on behalf of
Alderman Jacquelyn Gist
Alderman Joal Hall Broun
Alderman John Herrera
Alderman Randee Haven-O'Donnell
Alderman Dan Coleman
Alderman Lydia Lavelle
Mayor Mark Chilton

Awesome idea for Carrboro to do
Wed, 07/15/2009 - 14:26 — wjohnsonw1. For those of you wondering where the public discussion was, it is not necessary. These alderman were elected and they therefore can make all relevant decisions about life in Carrboro they want to. Don't like it, then move or vote somebody else into office.
They can vote to take every dollar you have in property taxes and you have no recourse other than to move or vote somebody else into office.
2. I think Carrboro should lead by example and have a public health care option for all documented Carrboro residents. Just raise the property tax by a few thousand dollars per house worth over (let's say) $300k to fund it.
Come on Carrboro alderman, LEAD BY EXAMPLE and vote this into place.
You are a genius!
Thu, 07/16/2009 - 18:58 — elvisboy77That is exactly what Obamacare plans to do. Let's just tax the rich. Piece of cake. You must be a DC insider.
We all have projects we believe in
Thu, 07/16/2009 - 13:49 — marcoplosI'm just happy that Goldman Sachs is doing so well on our tax dollars. It's also great that our tax dollars are going for a 2nd round of bonuses for the quality work that AIG has done.
And beyond that, sending drones to blow up Pakistani villagers may be the best use of tax money ever.
Finally
Thu, 07/16/2009 - 18:58 — elvisboy77I agree with you! Wow.
Not my representatives
Mon, 07/13/2009 - 17:49 — elvisboy77I disagree with them sending a letter like that. When was the public discussion, did I miss it?
Uncle Sam is not the answer to all of our problems. If benefits are costing Carrboro too much then maybe they should cut them. Imagine the horror of having to be fiscally responsible! It will never happen.
Even More Importantly...
Mon, 07/13/2009 - 16:15 — ClaudiusWhy didn't they send an identical letter to Senator Burr? After all, he's the one who really needs to be convinced that his constituents want and demand a public option.
Great letter - great representation
