Rick Warren's invocation

Bookmark and Share

The choice of evangelical Rick Warren of the huge Saddleback Church in California to give the invocation at Barack Obama's inauguration today rankled many Americans. I'm sure many wondered what he would say and were holding their breath as he prayed. I always wonder whether Christian clergymen will invoke the name of Jesus when they are praying in such a setting. Warren invoked the name in several languages, in fact.

He praised a God "loving to everyone you've made;" said we are celebrating "a hinge point of history" in inaugurating our first African-American president; said we are so grateful to live in this land, a land of unequaled opportunity; asked that God help us to remember that we are Americans, united by our commitment to freedom and justice for all; asked in advance for forgiveness for any upcoming transgressions; and asked that we never forget that all people and all nations will stand accountable before God one day.

He then committed the Obamas unto God's care.

 So how did he do?

Rick Warren

I was surprised when the Obama team invited Rick Warren to offer the prayer at this event. I listened carefully. I thought Rev. Warren represented himself and his interpretation of Christian beliefs well. I can only hope he and his followers will continue to honor the diverse views and people of our great land and trust God to do the judging. I am also counting on him to be a partner with President Obama in working for a more just and equitable society.

Are we talking about

Noun Christians...or Verb Christians ?
The Christians who proclaim and their actions show the world of God's love in them Or the Christians of the "Inquisistion, crusades, and ethnic cleasing " types ?

In the ideal of

free speech...I really didn't care what he has to say or think. Just like many people of the universe really don't care what any of us has to say. Why ? we are all too wrapped up in "self". If you don't believe me, then get in someones way on I-40 in the passing lane. See everything is normal.

invocation to whom?

Rick Warren was used by the Lord today to tell America: You have been ignoring Me and have turned your backs on Me, but I still love you all. I am very pleased that this American is a true Christian and not what I am begining to call a 'Christian-American' (a new race, which refers to Americans who call themselves Christians but whose God is their own ego). Lord, bless your son Rick at this time. Thank You for Him and those Americans that are like him: true to You alone!
