Education talk is the subject of the (probable) last installment of soundbites from the editorial board meeting with Gov. Beverly Perdue this month. Perdue lamented coming cuts in the state's education budget and talked of one program she will never cut: early college credits for high school students. She also talked of her decision to shift the power in the state's education hierarchy from the elected superintendent of public instruction (June Atkinson) to her appointed CEO and board chairman (Bill Harrison).

Governor Perdue Comments about DPI Leadership
Fri, 04/03/2009 - 14:30 — dwp0948Just because Governor Easley ran the DPI for 8 years does NOT justify her continuing this. There were comments, apparently erroneously, that candidate Perdue was going to not meddle in DPI and let Ms. Atkinson be the leader. I know individuals who were undecided by the Republican or Democratic candidates and voted for Perdue because the Republican candidate was clear on his view of the State Superintendent. He wanted to eliminate the position. Candidate Perdue was just more dishonest. She wanted to run the department but never told anyone. Also, I think it is an error to have the "CEO" be the chair of the State Board of Education also. If NC does not improve in its educational standing, everyone now knows who is the blame!
