Letters to the editor: A heads-up to readers

Bookmark and Share

This no doubt will be as helpful as the time I heard a television anchor announce, "Don't worry if your power is off. CP&L is working on the problem." Um, if the power is off, chances are they aren't watching YOU, buddy.

Telling readers HERE  that we simply cannot handle faxed letters anymore ... yeah, about the same amount of logic as the above. Chances are, if you're still using a fax machine, you ain't reading a blog. :)

Of course, there are state legislators who shall remain unidentified to protect the guilty who still send us faxed letters ...

Letters sent by snail mail we still read and consider, and ones that make the cut we take turns typing. But letters sent by fax ... when the fax machine is not exactly nearby ... just too hard to manage.

While we're on the subject, it is so helpful if you do not send letters as attachments in your emails and instead just paste the letter into the email's body. We're working on oldish Macs that don't like newish Word attachments all that much.

It's extremely gratifying the numbers of letters we get, the number of people who want to participate in the community conversation that we create on our pages. Continue to send your letters! It increases your chances of seeing print exponentially, though, if you don't fax them.

Thank you for reading The N&O.

Perdue Vetoes Photo ID

My checks are imprinted with my driver's license number.  If I write a check to a merchant, the merchant still requires a physical look at license.  If I were to be stopped by a law enforcement officer, he would also require my license.  Why?   My license has my photo.  Without the photo my identification cannot be verified.  Without the photo, if so inclined, I could loan them to anyone.  Surely this is not  Governor's reason for veteo.

Calling All Animal Lovers

Recently I went to Magnolia Animal Hospital which is where my animals are cared for and the told me they were in need of donations such as blankets, towels, etc. for the animals that are cared for there.  I have donated items to them in the past so I decided to do a good deed and call the Goodwill Store (office in Durham), to see if I could speak to someone there about donating items to Magnolia.  When I made the call I identified myself, why I was calling, etc.  I indicated that I had been shopping and donating items to the Goodwill stores for 31 years and then asked the manager at the other end of teh line if they would be kind enough to donate blankets, towels to Magnolia animal hospital because they were in need.  The reply I received was shocking!  I am sorry our policy is to never donate to anyone because if we give to one then we will have to give to another.  It was mentioned they provide computers, classes.  I then said do you suppose you would consider changing your policy in the future?  The answer was a resounding no.  Well all you pet lovers out there think twice before deciding which organization you want to donate to this year or any other year.  I have already made my decision.
