As part of his visit with The N&O editorial board, state GOP Chairman Tom Fetzer pointed out that Americans need to remember that our sovereignty lies not with our government but with us, and he said that being an American comes with important duties and requires harder work than most realize.
He also said that we tend to overanalyze every nuance of every election and that he has come to an important realization: the ground game rules.
Here are excerpts of his talking of these things:

Important duties & responsibilities for Americans.
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 12:48 — lrlrlrRE: N&O article on Obama's speech to school children & Fetzer's Position: "This speech is clearly political in nature and has no place in the classroom," Fetzer said in a prepared statement. "Our focus should be improving our students’ test scores, not the President’s approval rating."Has Fetzer ever taken the responsibility here and retracted his earlier statement given that Obama's speech was clearly limited to encouraging kids to study hard, take responsibility for their education so they can contribute to this country as adults, and the need to respect teachers & parents? Is he embarrased by his previous position or even once said "sorry I was wrong"?The extreme partisanship shown by people like Fetzer (as evidenced by the statement above) shows that he does NOT take his responsibility as an American seriously. He just wants his party to win and he's even with the more conservative end of that party. Extremism of any type is not conservative... it's just another brand of extremism.
The independants rule
Fri, 11/06/2009 - 23:15 — redriverRegardless what the GOP and Democrats do they can not hide from the fact that they no longer rule the roost. The independant vote controls all national elections now and will for the foreseeable future. It is more important than all the minorities put together and they have not realized it yet. Although not a party, the independant movement controls all elections and could be seen as a uncelebrated third party. If the parties want to stay in office they must bend to the independants and satisfy their wishes. Both parties can crow and scream all they want but they have lost the mainstream of America and probably will never gain it back. The fact is that independants are growing at a faster rate than both parties. The only thing they don't have is a leading body, once that happens the games will begin and then the voters will take this country back.
Fetzer's plan to define and explain GOP conservatism
Fri, 11/06/2009 - 12:22 — JedspedTom has a problem with his plan for educating people about what conservatism is, does, and means ala the NC GOP. No matter how much money, time or effort Fetzer spends trying to define the GOP and his "limited government conservatism he cannot overcome the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity Glenn Beck and others. Rush and friends are on the air, five days a week, giving all of us a vivid, multi-faceted, unadulterated look at what GOP conservatism means, is, and does. Good luck Tom.
