In October, many Broughton High School parents lobbied to keep the International Baccalaureate magnet program at the school, and the Wake County school board unanimously agreed, right or wrong, to leave it. Now that some Broughton parents see that keeping the magnet program means having to move out hundreds of students over three years to make more room for magnet students, they're trying to say, "Just kidding. We don't want the magnet program any more." Lots and lots of side issues here (not to mention falling dominoes) that could be argued all day, but the board needs to rethink its apparent willingness to reverse course on Broughton now. Let's remember that 30 percent of the kids there are magnet students — which means 600 kids could be affected by yanking the IB program.
