Xing (pronounced shing or sing) means journey in Chinese — fitting for this blog, which is all about the journey of the U.S. men's basketball team and N&O staff writer Luciana Chavez at the 2008 Beijing Games. She is covering her first Olympics and making her first trip to China. Check in here for Olympic news and for Luci's impressions getting to and being at the Games.
BEIJING — Former UNC long-distance runner Shalane Flanagan will have another shot at another Olympic medal on Friday when she competes in the finals of the 5,000-meter run at the Beijing Olympics.
Flanagan, 27, who lives in Pittsboro and still trains while running her favorite trails in Chapel Hill, won a bronze medal in the 10,000-meter run on Aug. 15 with a time of 30:22.22.
Asked, after she qualified for the 5,000 finals on Tuesday, to say send a message to the folks back home in North Carolina, Flanagan had a message for UNC football coach Butch Davis.
Also, hear Flanagan talk about how she qualified for the 5,000 with a season-best time of 14:59.69.

Thu, 08/21/2008 - 18:03 — izzykareemshe just said that she "...can't wait to get back home and see some good college football games."
She also said that she was disappointed in all the DWI's that have been coming out of Chapel Hill from the prominent student-athletes, and that she wishes Butch hadn't put high school bleachers in Kenan Stadium...stuff like that.
She also said she wished that she had went to NCSU because the guys there are real men, stuff like that, no biggie
