Olympics Xing

Xing (pronounced shing or sing) means journey in Chinese — fitting for this blog, which is all about the journey of the U.S. men's basketball team and N&O staff writer Luciana Chavez at the 2008 Beijing Games. She is covering her first Olympics and making her first trip to China. Check in here for Olympic news and for Luci's impressions getting to and being at the Games.

Chandler out for U.S.

Tyson Chandler won't be available as a roster replacement for the U.S. men's basketball team at the Beijing Olympics after reaggravating a big toe injury, a USA Basketball spokesman said Saturday evening.

Chandler, a 7-foot, 1-inch center with the New Orleans Hornets, was scheduled to train with the U.S. team in Las Vegas beginning Monday. Chandler was considered the first option to join the roster for any potential injured player on the U.S. team, regardless of position.

Chandler's injury does not affect the U.S. options for its Olympic roster. The rest of the full national team is available as a replacement should someone suffer an injury and be deemed unable to play.

The cutoff date for changes to the Olympic roster is Aug. 7. The U.S. opens Olympic play on Aug. 10 against host China.
