A bad start in Beijing

BEIJING — They say in China that bad luck at the start of a journey or a task is an auspicious thing.

Better to have it out of the way.

That's what my new friend Li Xinhua told me this morning after he scrapped me off the tarmac at Beijing International Airport, then made sure airline employees got me an ambulance to the hospital.

After nearly 30 hours en route to China, I fell and sprained my ankle — thought I broke it.

An American doctor at an American-run Beijing hospital said no after I had x-ray where I stood on one end of the machine and it basically lifted and tipped me on my back to take an x-ray of my foot.

FYI to our presidential candidates, my ambulance ride set me back 210 RMB but Li talked them down to 200, which is roughly $30 American.
