Feedback: N&O weather page

Bookmark and Share
Tags: photos | weather

Starting July 7th, the weather on the back of B section will change from it's current, six-column format to a smaller, three-column format.

Before we launch the new page, we'd like your feedback. Did we get rid of an element that you used every day? Is some of the information confusing? Is there something you'd like us to add?

We can't promise to make every change, but we will consider every request. Please post your suggestions here.

Thank you.

Who is your real competitor?

You say that you are removing Greg Fishel's weather feature because WRAL is a competitor of the N&O.
Well, what about WPTF radio? They are a competitor of the N&O, yet you run a column each week by Rick Martinez, who is the programming director for that radio station.
Shouldn't you also reveal that Mr. Martinez' wife works for the conservative John Locke Foundation? Why doesn't the N&O have a local progressive columnist writing columns on a regular basis?

new weather page

Will miss the precip for the cities in the US, but I can get over that. How about adding back Portland Ore to the US weather cities? I glance at the weather page, but I usually get my weather info from the RDU National Weather Service web page or from TV stations. Sorry to see the reduction, but was expecting it with the other sections being reduced. BTW, I did submit a few weather questions to Greg Fischel and they were published. I've kept those papers with my name in it!

Did like the state map with the various weather forecast. But I can get over that too.

You are kidding, right?

- The television guide is worthless - put it back in the Lifestyle section.
- We are not currently in a drought, and even so, it is helpful to have a space to show where the droughts may be. (Down 2.95 inches for the year - we are probably in pre-drought conditions.)
- Keep the temperature trend - it tells the story of where we are and where we may be heading.
- the state lines are nearly invisible
- If you are going to have color for the maps, include a color for the air quality - it can be green, yellow, orange, red, and purple
- The same is for the UV index
- The national map with temperatures - why post the same thing on the map and in the table below the map (Houston 95/78, Charlotte 90/65, LA 83/61, etc .... Personally, I would rather see the contiguous 48 Record Highs and Lows in red and blue.
- For a special Friday map I would run the drought index map
- There needs to be a space for tropical updates June 1-November 30.

I agree with a previous comment - I am looking for trends for the Triangle and surrounding areas. I watch the Weather Channel a couple of times a day. I have the weather channel icon on my computer at work. If I want weather forecasts for another city I enter the information and get the 10-day for that part of the country.

I stand on my previous comment - you can sell the paper on quality, price, or service - cutting back the physical size of the newspaper was understandable, and conserved paper. Cutting back content, not so much. Cutting the competition out of the weather page - fine - if they weren't paying to be in the paper, why run them? The paper should generate business fr the website and the website should generate business for the paper. Everything needs to be linked ... McClatchy is a large enterprise - link the papers, link the forecasts, make it easy access for any subscriber - print or on-line.

You can generate profits by reducing overhead, increasing revenue, or both. Remember the 'both.'

Latest mockup

So, this is the weather map in its current form. I don't see much more changing, but I'm still open to your ideas. Changed from the first mockup:

  • * Removed the world cities area, as discussed
  • * Added dew points
  • * Added another day of forecasts to each of the state cities
  • * Added sky conditions for each day of state forecasts (pc, c, s, sn, etc.)
  • * Added two more state cities.
  • * Added three more regional cities to the national cities listing.

Thanks for all your feedback.

Lo/Hi

The map shows Hi/Lo but the forecast and the tables all show Lo/Hi. Can we at least be consistent?

Good catch,

Good catch, tomlinkusa.

Done.

What would this group think

What would this group think about killing the international weather entirely and adding more N.C. cities?

I won't bring back that state map for several reasons, the most important being the shape of the state proportionally compared to the space we have to show it in; essentially it would be useless. The second reason is that I like the national map not for the national weather, but as an indicator of the type and scope of weather coming at us from the west.

As for the beach and mountains forecasts, these had to be written, edited and tweaked to fit space every night, and we decided to spend our resources in other areas. These are tough times ….

I like stewarc0's suggestion of putting back the percipitation indicators for the city listings, especially if you all seem to want to wax the national listings. I'll play with it, but I'm not making any promises.

That you all for taking the time to give feedback on our new weather presentation.

International Weather, State, Local, Regional

International does not apply to a lot of readers. I stated in a previous comment if I want weather outside the area, I go to a website and enter a city. Leave it out, unless it is a storyline: Extended heat wave in _____ kills 12 .... see page a3.

For that matter, add a line or two for 'weather in the news...' for today "Wilmington is Socked with 6 inches of rain."

New Weather

First, about the current weather.  On page 1, the pictures for "partly cloudy" show 2 dark clouds and no sun (see Friday's page 1 for example), yet on the weather page, "partly cloudy" is depicted by a single cloud partially blocking a sun.  Can you fix page 1?

Second, I like the current weather page the way it is, but would prefer a 5-day forecast to a 4-day forecast.  I like the national map because it shows fronts and a general view of weather across the country.  I don't need the international listing, but I would prefer a NC map than a long list of cities.

dew point temp

Please don't remove dew point from the weather page. I can tell with a glance how humid the day is going to be, and you just can't do that with the humidity/temp measurement; even with two daily readings. There is not a weather issue more impoortant in our southeast summers than humidity. GIve us more information rather than less. A a long time subscriber I would appreciate an explanation that provides the rationale for leaving out a two digit entry that conveys so much important information. Thank you

Ah, Will! You're

Ah, Will!

You're persistent about that dew point, I'll give you that.

I agree that dew point is a far superior measure of humidity. The problem I have is that people don't know that a dew point of 45 is arid and a dew point of 75 is humid. You just don't hear people around the water cooler talking about those dew points — unless they're pilots. :)

To be honest, I don't think most people really understand relative humidit, either. But, they think that they do, which makes the number more approachable.

All that said, I'm giving in on this one. I'm adding dew point and leaving the relative humidity as well. I'll take a line or two out of the international weather.

New Weather Page

I know that there is a recession going on, but we are continually disappointed in all the changes with the paper. Each change seems to bring a smaller and thinner paper.

What happened to Greg Fishel on the weather page? He is such a Raleigh area icon! His column was educational and informative and our household always looked forward to seeing what the weather question of the day was.

We have family that live across the US, and it is nice to be able to see the weather by city.

I hope the disappearing three columns will not be replaced by ads.

We took Greg's weather off

We took Greg's weather off the weather page because WRAL is our compeditor. We were essentially giving WRAL about $1 million of free advertising space a year — That's what it would have cost someone else to have taken the same amount of space at our current ad rates.

Before removing his weather, we wanted to ensure that the weather we would be proving was as good as his. I did a couple of months worth of statistical calculations and found that his temperature forecasts differed on average less than a degree from what we could get from the national weather service.

As for the weather question, it rarely had "real" people asking questions. Because there was so little interest in the feature, Greg typically made up his own question to answer.

Agreed on the NC maps

I agree that I'm far more likely to use The N&O weather maps to help me plan a day trip or a weekend trip to the mountains or beach than to see what the temps are in Dubai or Beijing ... that's the sort of info I can get from the Web if I want it.

weather page

We need to know the weather at the mountains and the beach. Been missing this since the last format change. And don't forget the tides... need this for day trips. Either put the NC map back or list more NC mountain/beach cities. Listing temps for cities outside NC isn't as valuable as the actual weather codes: cl, r, etc. because the temps show on the map. And I can also do without the international listings.

Mountains, Coast, and Triangle

We do need something for a 'weekend outlook' during the course of the week. Friday, Saturday, Sunday Forecasts.

new weather

Good job - but I would miss the NC map, especially in the summer when we tend to day-trip and use the weather map to help decide where to go. And I will miss the hourly forecast that is given for "today". I do miss the dew point info you used to provide.

I agree with other posters that we could do without international weather, also could do without or with much less national weather.

And please keep the moon phase, moon & sun rise & set times.

New Weather Page

You've done a good job of condensing all of the relevant weather information. The only thing I'd like to see added back in is a NC map. And I think you can scrap the listing of the World temperatures.

weather map

I prefer the NC map to show info for around the state, rather than a listing.

NC weather should take preference. I can get national/international up to date on weather.com.

But if you're going to have a US map, put more cities on it.
