Did they have enough school

Did they have enough school supplies to hand out to everyone at this event? It sure looks like there were a lot of people who attended. It's great to host events like these especially in this era of time. There are so many people struggling to even buy a couple 7 inch binders. These binders are usually required for a lot of classes too. It's so sad.

Free

You say the word free and these people get up and run to it. You say the word work and they run from it

I have lived and served as a volunteer at the rescue missiom. As long as these people are not seen or only seen while driving by there is not a problem. Only when it is put right in your face that you are heard. These pictures show how bad it is in Durham when so many people can't afford basics like pencil and paper. Think about this when you all are building your toys to play ball in and to entertain your selfs in. You all should be ashamed. God is watching and he is real.

Before you cast judgement

I urge all of you who have left comments to take the time to volunteer at the DRM. I participated in the Back to School event and left with a sense that I touched the lives of many youngsters and they touched my life as well. We can all make a difference in a child's life even if it is just with a smile or a kind word. Everyone loves to be recognized and this event allows each of these kids to feel like their community cares-a little attention goes a long way.
If you want to appreciate all that you have, spend a day with these kids. They were thankful to receive a balloon, a backpack and some threadbare clothing (which wouldn't even have made it to a Goodwill or thrift store because of it's condition). The idea of giving out school supplies at school makes obvious sense, but the social nature of this event is what really matters. The community comes together to give the kids and their parents a day of giveaways and good times and the focus, ultimately, is on education and it's importance. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. At least these kids have a plan for the first day of school!

Nope, wasn't at the meeting.

Nope, wasn't at the meeting. Might share with a speaker, might not - don't know who your talking about. If parents can't afford pencils and notebooks for their kids, we've got bigger problems that a giveaway isn't going to fix. Does the Rescue Center get tax dollars? I didn't know, I know some people who might help-out there, but as volunteers. They've got a good group of volunteers. I forget the point, if there was one.

Dig it: people who find giveaways alluring vote. If I wanted to slam black people, I would've. But in this case, it's the giveaway that matters. I do notice when healthcare rallys swarm with whites, illegal immigration rallys swarm with hispanics and this school supply photo since it's predominatly blacks. So what?

Instead of having people in

Instead of having people in line at 5am, and some pushing and shoving, it would be better to give the school supplies to the schools. The principals and teachers know who need the supplies more and the ones that really need them won't be left out, and maybe there would be leftovers that could be given out later in the school year instead of teacher's having to buy supplies.

Takes one to know one...

Robdarich says, "looks like the opposite of a healthcare rally." Say, weren't you the same person who complained about a stacked deck -- you know, with "lots of people who share characteristics with those in the photo" in attendance -- at a recent health care town hall meeting in Durham? Or maybe it was someone who shared characteristics with you. I'm grateful to the Rescue Mission and corporate sponsors who helped these families and saved some teachers a few dollars in school supplies that they usually hand out all year long when kids have none. I don't think anyone -- even Rob-da-rich -- would want students to go without school supplies and get a negative feeling about education. (Insert backlash comment about the cost of pencils vs. the cost of junk food or other extravagances that poor folks should just NOT spend Robdarich's hard-earned tax money on.) Oh, and it's not always "people who share characteristics with those in the photo" who come to school without supplies. A lot of students of all ethnicities arrive at school in brand new cars or pickup trucks their daddy bought them when they turned fifteen, along with their Blackberries and designer book bags, but no pencils or notebook paper. Bless their little hearts.

looks like the opposite of a healthcare rally. There is one white kid (left border, left of post) and one white adult (orange jacket).

Next time anyone suggests voters should take action, try to remember that lots of people who share characteristics with those in the photo - vote. (kinda explains things, doesn't it?)

Can't get people to a heathcare rally, but free pencils gets a mob. Votes must cost less than a notebook (do politicans know about this, oh my...)
