Former President Bill Clinton Clinton was the last of a dozen speakers to share memories of John Hope Franklin and his wife, Aurelia. The celebration on Thursday, June 11, 2009, in a packed Duke Chapel and broadcast live to an overflow audience, was a celebration of both their lives.

I was impressed by what he had done (as witnessed by the photos and documents around the place) as well as the relative modesty of his circumstances. As for the man himself – I have rarely met anyone more dignified, yet accessible. A great loss to this town, as well as the country and the world.

His best-known book- From slavery to freedom-a history of African American –was his contribution to the humanity. Unfortunately, on 25th march, 2009 we have lost this great man. June 11 was the 69th wedding anniversary of Franklin and his late wife. In this very special day, the nation has celebrated his life with heart full of respect.
