An hour into our hike last night on the Falls Lake Trail, we were about a quarter mile north of NC 98, on Section 8, when our headlamps caught something odd up ahead. Not odd in the "Ack!-I-thought-there-hadn't-been-a-mountain-lion-in-these-parts-in-a-couple-hundred-years" sense. Odd in the "What the [heck] is that?" sense?
Is it some sort of hunting camo? Bad hunting camo?
It was fabric, it was reflective, it had yellow crime scene tape wrapped around it. It hung from a low tree branch. It looked a little like ... a tent? But why was it hanging from a low branch? And what was the deal with the crime scene tape? We examined it on our return trip, again, with equal bafflement.
So ... anyone know what the heck that was? If it's any help, this section of trail is on N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission land, not State Park land. Sure would like to know.
