Update: Crabtree Creek Greenway's missing link

Bookmark and Share

The Serokas family writes: Back on February 1 you reported the following about the following about the Crabtree greenway near Duraleigh Road: "It's a complicated issue; for our purposes today there's positive news to report: a route has been tentatively agreed upon. "Within 30 to 60 days we should have a signed agreement," says Hutchinson."
Well, it's almost October and I haven't seen any update. Any word on the street?

No word on the street, but we do have a few from Raleigh greenway planner Vic Lebsock: "We're still working with quarry to develop an approved agreement," he said this morning. "Frankly, it's more workload than anything to accomplish that."

Meaning there's a lot of back-and-forth between the city's attorneys and the quarry's to make this happen.

A quick recap of what you'll find at the above link: The Crabtree Creek Greenway runs basically uninterrupted from Milburnie Road in east Raleigh northwest to Lindsay Drive, just shy of Duraleigh Road. The goal is to punch the greenway through the remaining 1.5 miles to Umstead State Park. To to that, it must run through a quarry just upstream from Duraleigh. Complicating matters is that the quarry would like to expand operations; its neighbors would prefer that it not. At the beginning of the year, it looked like a plan to take the greenway around the affected area — by taking it up Duraleigh Road for a short bit, then gradually dropping it back down to the creek.

We'll check back in a month or two to see if the lawyers are making progress.
