Take the State Parks survey

Ever complained because a campground wasn't up to snuff? Groused that a hiking trail needed repair? Kvetched over a dearth of recreational opportunities?

Think we need more trails to avoid traffic jams such as this one at Eno River State Park (OK, it was during the annual Eno River Association New Year's Day Hike)? Take the State Parks survey and make your voice heard.

If you've ever done that at a state park, then here's your chance to direct that complaint in the right direction. The N.C. Division of State Parks and Recreation is opening their suggestion box in the form of an online survey. Go to their Web site, click on "State Park Survey" under "Items of Interest" in the column on the left, and spend about five minutes rating what you think works and what doesn't and indicating what you'd like to see more of.

"It's a chance for people really big on mountain biking to say they want more trails," said Peek, citing a "for instance."

One thing you don't need to complain about: The lack of a statewide campground reservation system. As reported earlier, that's being implemented next year, hopefully in April.

One other thing, says Peek, his voice trailing: "This has nothing to do with Graylyn Road." For that, there's another survey to fill out.

You have until Nov. 7 to fill out the State Parks survey.

"Don't care"

I was surprised by that as well. Seems that if you don't care about something — if it's not an interest to you — that's just as important as whether it's a high priority or a low one. I get annoyed when a survey forces ("Required" field) me to answer in a way I don't believe.

NC Parks Survey

I started the survey but quit. They *require* answers to all questions...and some of them I truly don't care. There was no "don't care" selection.

NC Parks survey

I appreciate NC Park's efforts to elicit feedback on all state parks and on Graylyn Road for Umstead State Park users through these on-line surveys.  Hopefully, those interested will take advantage of the opportunity to share their opinions.
