Good news for you Wintergreen ski fans. As of today, the Virginia ski area — the most popular Southeast ski area among Triangle skiers and riders — still has just 12 slopes open and four lifts running. But with continuous snowmaking planned at least through Sunday, here's how the resort expects to change that situation.
This puppy won't be getting much rest for the next several days.
Tomorrow, Wintergreen plans to drop the ropes on Tyro, Lower Diamond Hill, Devils Elbow, The Gap and Loggers Alley. Friday openings include Upper Diamond Hill and the Progression Terrain Park. If you go up Saturday, the Advanced Terrain Park should be open and come Sunday Wintergreen plans to add Upper Wild Turkey and Big Acorn to the mix. By my cypherin', come Monday the entire mountain should be open.
Of course, Monday is MLK Day, one of the busiest days of the year for the region's ski areas. Even though Wintergreen has some of the best lift capacity in the Southeast, the crush of holiday skiers could mean long lift lines (with the possible exception of the expert terrain). Thus, my suggestion that you stay home Monday and head up mid-week. If you do that, you might want to take the ski bus.
