Wintergreen Resort in Virginia, the closest ski area to the Triangle, will open for skiing and riding this Saturday. Wintergreen had intended to open only its tubing park — The Plunge — this weekend, waiting until Dec. 12 to open for skiing and riding. Natural snowfall and favorable snowmaking conditions for the past week caused them to contemplate bumping the opening up to Dec. 6. Now, Wintergreen plans to open the beginner Dobie run Saturday. Dobie is an expansive trail that runs much of the vertical length of the mountain. It is served by a detachable, high-speed six-person lift that gets people up the mountain speedy quick.
Maryland's Wisp Resort comes on line Friday.
Dobie and The Plunge will open for the weekend from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. The mountain will reopen next weekend. An adult lift ticket this weekend will run $45.
Snowmaking, btw, continues on Dobie as well as the beginner Potato Patch and intermediate Eagles Swoop runs.
If you're heading up tomorrow (or this morning for the afternoon session), here are your regional options: Appalachian, Ski Beech, Sugar and Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia. Dropping its ropes on Friday will be Wisp Resort in Maryland, which has gotten 18 inches of Mother Nature's own and has been blowing snow for a while now.
