TORC Race Director Sean Callihan reports that on the heels of a successful "Curse at the Crab" on Saturday — 81 riders, only one accident requiring a trip to the ER, and Sean reports Swin Dunbar, who took a branch in the chest, is doing just fine — two more local 6-hour endurance races are on tap.
First, the Heel of a Race will be held at Carolina North Forest (a k a Carolina North, a k a the Chapel Hill High School trails) probably on on Nov. 1, "but that is not confirmed yet," while 6 Hours on the River is planned for Little River Regional Park in January.

Swin Dunbar, who was impaled by a branch duing the CatC, took this and several other fine race pictures — presumably while waiting for medical assistance?

def. "Swinjury" - taking a handlebar to the stomach during a race.
Swin - hope you are feeling better! - Greg
Joe - Any plans to do any of the upcoming 6 hour races?
6 more hours?
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 15:57 — JoeMiller (author)I'd like to. Waiting to hear a final date on Carolina North. I'm scheduled to work Nov. 1, the tentative date. If that gets set in stone I'll see if someone can swap with me at work.
Anyone know if that's also a day/night affair? I have lighting issues I need to resolve.

My Injury
Wed, 10/08/2008 - 11:51 — Swin (not verified)I like the branch theory, but mtber1975 already clarified. Thanks for covering the MTB events. Now if I can just get the alien to stop trying to come out of my stomach. JOKE..in reference to the swollen and bruised part of my abs.

Wed, 10/08/2008 - 08:32 — JoeMiller (author)Thanks for the clarification. Apparently, by the time word got to me it had gone through a game of "telephone." ("Yeah, man, and there was this one guy who finished the race with a tree branch sticking through his chest! It was awesome!")
A clarification of my own: The ride itself was a pure delight. It was when I stopped and tried to dismount that the torture began.
Swin's injury
Tue, 10/07/2008 - 20:35 — mtber1975Just to clarify, Swin got the end of his handlebars stuck into his abdomen, not a branch to the chest...luckily, he had caps on the end of his bars, so he was just bruised and not impaled! Good to see you out there Joe...I've never met you, but recognized you when we lined up at the starting line...we are lucky to have a local writer who not only understands and appreciates mountain biking, but is willing to put himself through the torture of a six hour race! :) *** oh, and Swin's pics are actually linked in this thread - http://trianglemtb.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=14356.0 His photos are linked in the 9th post down
